THE FORCE OF THE EXPLOSION in Halifax harbour destroyed the stained glass windows in churches and other houses of worship throughout the city; those in the Richmond neighbourhood of North Halifax fared worst of all. All four churches there suffered extensive damage. St. Mark’s Anglican, Kaye Street Methodist, Grove Street Presbyterian (whose congregation had only the night before celebrated paying off the last of the church’s debts), and even St. Joseph’s, which was of sturdy stone construction, lay in ruins. The North End churches lost many parishioners: St. Joseph’s, 404; St. Mark’s, 200; Grove Street Presbyterian, 148; and Kaye Street Methodist, 91. Outside the explosion’s one-mile blast radius, Starr Street synagogue also suffered severe damages, although its all-important ark, which held the Torah scrolls, survived.
